Summer is just beginning, the skin is glowing, but people don’t think about taking care of the delicate skin around the eyes.
Summer heat can totally dehydrate your skin starting from the inside out, leaving your face and body dry, including the face and skin around the eyes.
H2O is #1: So the first thing to do to help your skin stay young, supple and healthy is to hydrate! Everyone says it because it’s true. You’re more active and sweating more, so you must increase the water intake to make up for the loss. Hydrate to flush out impurities that can harm the organs. And remember: the skin is the body’s largest organ!
Don’t Fight the Light: Frowning and squinting too much can eventually cause wrinkles and the look of premature aging. Our natural facial expressions can create wrinkles as we age. We naturally “scrunch up” our face in reaction to harsh sunlight. Wear a wide–brim hat or put on shades.
Shades—More than Cool: The right choice of sunglasses does wonders. Dark glasses can hide dark circles from late nights, hide wrinkles and a host of temporary problems. But the sunglasses with polarized lenses reduce glare and prevent those squinting eyes which encourage crow’s feet. And when the lenses are coated with the right UV filters, you get extra UVA and UVB ray block from the sun. Make sure the labels that say “100% protection” or “UV 400” are real. Get the trendy large lenses for maximum coverage. Stylish big shades and wrap–arounds are best for those genetically prone to the fine lines in the skin at the corners of the eye. You don’t have to break the bank, but no matter the price, make sure the lenses are not distorted — badly–made lenses will cause more squinting, leading to more wrinkles. Select wisely. It’s a good investment.
Darker Circles, Bigger Bags: Less sleep in the summer plus genetics, too many long hours on the computer, stress and an unhealthy diet can all contribute to the thin skin under your eyes becoming dark, discolored and/or puffy. The result? Dark circles and/or bags under the eyes that make you look tired, exhausted and not physically fit. It’s tempting to stay up till dawn, but everyone still needs rest.
Skin Smarts’ Ways to Look Your Best: you’ll probably need commercial moisturizing and problem–solving products, but it doesn’t hurt to try some natural at–home remedies, too.
Steam Opportunity – At all family gatherings I am summoned to bring the potato salad. As I prepare it, I always use the steam from the cooked potatoes to do a mini steam facial.
Add Some Padding – Take the juice extracted from the boiling potatoes and apply it to a cotton pad or large cotton ball. Place the cotton pads onto both eyes. The potato juice also has a natural skin lightening agent that can be very effective.
Cool the Cucumber – Cucumbers soothe and brighten and are a natural gentle astringent. Chill slices in refrigerator for 20 minutes and then place on closed eyes.
Oil Up – Almond Oil and Vitamin E help to moisturize and fade. Use a needle to poke the Vitamin E pill and squeeze out the vitamin oil. Leave on overnight.
The abundant warm weather, bright sunshine and 16–hours of daylight may be wonderful to see… but it’s not easy on the eyes.
