Another successful Curlfest event in Prospect Park! Each year attendance increases and this year’s festival brought more than 20,000 colorfully dressed and colorfully coiffed people and their admirers to Brooklyn. The Curly Girl Collective‘s mission is “to create innovative experiences that harness the energy of the natural hair movement and showcase the best brands for modern women of color.” And they accomplished their mission on that sunny Saturday this July.
It was empowering to see everyone — not just Black and Latina; anyone with a natural curl was there. Great to see young children learning from example to embrace the hair that they’re born with. People were able to get braided hairstyles at the Mielle Organics and at Shea Moisture, where folks could get a shape up, too! Vendors handed out sample-sized products at various booths. Folks brought blankets and enjoyed purchases from the food trucks. The DJ had everyone dancing on the lawn. Music, dance, games, panel talks, culture and most of all individual fashion — a fulfilling day!
