An invitation has arrived for a great New Year’s Eve party not to be missed. What to do so that you’re walking out your door with great skin and your best face forward?
Day before the party: If you’re planning to have a professional facial, do it the day before so the face calms down. I recommend two days before, especially for sensitive skin types that can have reactions to treatment.
Start Clean On New Year’s Eve: start your regimen with a clean face. Use your favorite cleanser, rinse well and gently pat dry.
Skin-Smarts Tip: I make my traditional New Year’s Eve potato salad every year. I use the steam from my boiling potatoes to give me a quick 10 minute “mini facial steam”.
Pre–Party Mask: After steaming, apply a 15–minute homemade milk and honey firming mask (see below). The luxurious combination of firming honey combined with milk’s proteins, lactic acid and Vitamin D rids the face of dry dull build-up. A much needed boost!
Not cooking before the party? You can use the homemade mask in the early evening while taking a relaxing warm bath. Make sure the water is not too hot as it dries the skin, especially during cold weather.
Honey Mask Recipe: mix or blend 1-tablespoon milk and 1-teaspoon raw honey* until the honey is dissolved and there is a creamy consistency. You can add 1-teaspoon ground oatmeal for calming and exfoliating. Let sit on a clean face 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Gently pat dry.
* Note: Processed honey may cause a skin reaction, so raw honey is recommended. Regardless, do a patch test on the inside of the arm before putting anything new on your skin.
Don’t Skip the Toner… and the Serum: Serum is a must after cleansing, the mask and toner. Use a few drops of serum to smooth all over the face to reduce lines and wrinkles
Moisturizer Is Next: Don’t forget to moisturize the neck and the hands! Speaking of hands, don’t let cracked hands from the cold dry climate make you ashamed to show off your glittery New Year’s Eve manicure. Petroleum jelly or a cream moisturizer will seal in hydration.
Now Your Face Is Ready For Makeup. Avoid New Year’s misery meltdown. Now is the time to use products that have staying power, like long wearing mascara and lipsticks that require less frequent application. Use eye shadow that doesn’t crease.
Avoid dull makeup that fades into oblivion; on New Year’s you want to glow, reflect light, and sparkle.
I Was Asked: if you take only a small clutch purse to the party, what’s the one Skin-Smarts thing you’d put in there? This was tricky to answer! Maybe shimmer powder or an oil blotting powder, but the brown liner pencil has many facets: you can touch up brows, lips, strengthen eye liner without overpowering, contour… take that pencil to do a variety of touch ups you may need!
