In 2014, five women who embrace their naturally curly hair held their first CurlFest event in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. This year, the women, called the CurlyGirl Collective, took over an entire island!

Attendance at #Curlfest2019 is so big that it had to be held on its own island! It has become a powerful and empowering experience for everyone with naturally curly hair!

Upon arriving early on Randall‘s Island it was almost like walking on a new earth: the grass was thick and lush. It had the fresh dewy smell that gave the sense that you were in a New World with a new beginning. And then as the attendees arrived it was like how I love gardening and putting my hand in the soil — all these beautiful flowers started to grow and develop from the earth and it was amazing to see.

There are also skincare companies here — when I met the BlackRadiance representative, it reminded me of my time as marketing and sales executive for Black Radiance and Black Opal too! Also at the event were ButterBar, EdenBodyworks, UrbanSkinRx and Taylor Beauty!

Two days of curly expression! CurlFest has grown from a great meeting of curly minds to a grand celebration of uniqueness and unity! So many creative people!

A variety of activities at CurlFest last Saturday. I met these wonderful creative young artists @RaisingRebelsPod holding a live painting event in the Artists Circle. Look them up and check out their podcast, with topics on raising strong children and families.

Best part about CurlFest is meeting women entrepreneurs like Kayley, selling beautiful head wraps. There were food trucks for those who didn’t bring a picnic lunch. Lots of people with entrepreneurial spirit!

This young man said that he dressed as the “King of Ghana” would. It was so empowering for everyone to be among thousands celebrating what they had in common while celebrating what made each of them unique.
Skin and hair products are increasingly being marketed to men, so it was great to see men at the booths and enjoying the event.

While CurlFest is about embracing natural hair, skin designs were evident too. We all must take care of the skin we’re given. Be sure to thoroughly clean the face and body of makeup and body paint to avoid clogged pores, breakouts and allergic reactions.
(For such an occasion, Pat Collins SkinSolutions facial cleansers are great products to bring back your fresh, natural glow! All products are for men’s skin, too!)
