Spring Awakens in a New Way
I planned a spring of many in-person networking opportunities and learning experiences, but as you know, the past coupe of months were not normal!
March: MWBE Women’s History Month
Kicked off March with the Minority- and Women-owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) Women’ s History Month Event, where they shared information on how to launch, grow, or expand your small business. This was my last in-person event before staying inside!
If you are female, a member of a minority group, have a New York-based small business and want to learn more about MWBE, click here
April: Empowering Women’s Business
My first virtual summit experience! Spent time safe inside at Epic Women Creating Global Empires Summit, hosted by Dr. Cheryl Wood, a motivational speaker, author, and speaker development coach. Virtual attendees were able to watch interviews with experts and influencers and get advice on how to launch ideas and scale businesses. My friend Mikki Taylor (see photo at top of this article) was a key speaker. As one of the most impactful editors in Essecnce Magazine’s history it’s always worth hearing her words of wisdom!
April: Dive into the World of Independent Beauty Entrepreneurs
I’m still so thankful to BeautyX Summit and Beauty Independent Magazine for making the videos of the #BeautyXSummit presentations and panel discussions available for free viewing through the month of April! The summit took place in January in Los Angeles, This was a gift to everyone who was unable to fly to LA. So educational to watch panels discuss independent beauty company case studies, and to hear up to date news on branding strategies, influencers, public relations and demand generation. I look forward to being there in person one day!
May: Makeup Trends and Industry Tips
The Makeup Show, the largest pro only beauty event in the United States, held online webinars instead of its in-person event hosted by Danessa Myricks and James Vincent. Thanks to Owner/Co-Founder Shelly Taggar for creating an online community to provide advice to professionals in the beauty industry. I enjoyed going to the Makeup Show in NYC last year; crossing fingers they will do it again in August https://www.themakeupshow.com/nyc/.
May: Empowerment and Inspiration and Encouragement
Watched some captivating people at the online Captivating Conversations Summit, organized by Kim Coles, the creator of The KimUnity, and co-star of the beloved television sit com “Living Single”. She hosted empowering sessions on subjects such as meditation and exercise, staying healthy in stressful times and pursuing and monetizing your passion with guest speakers that included journalist Rolanda Watts, and “Living Single” co-stars Kim Fields and Erika Alexander.
May: Learning Why and What Makes the Ultimate Experts Do What They Do
Watched expert celebrity makeup artist Sam Fine interview fellow expert celebrity makeup artist Derrick Rutledge on his Instagram TV show “Fine & Friends”. Derrick has so much experience — life experience and professional experience, ups and downs, working with Oprah, Patti Labelle and Michelle Obama — that Sam gave him two fascinating segments! Even though I’ve known them for years, there’s always something new and inspiring to learn. Derrick says, “When you want something… and you speak it out loud and you pray on it, it will happen”. He’s got stories!

We all ought to be grateful that the internet enables us to continue self-development, to continue to learn and get to network even when we’re unable to meet in person. Definitely take advantage of any online events that come up until it’s safe to go out again!
