Skincare at Summer’s Close: most of us may not have spent a lot of time outdoors this summer, but we still have to prepare the skin for fall and changes in the weather.

Some enjoyed at least three months of sun-worshiping and hot weather, spending hours outside, soaking up the rays (sometimes forgetting sunscreen), digging in our gardens, being bombarded with salt water spray, soaking in chlorinated pools, and getting sand in places we don’t want.

How can we recover from that in time for Fall?

A long summer exposure to sun, extreme heat, all that’s in the air that attracts to your skin like a magnet: salt water, pool water, “fresh” water, dirt, sand, leaves, oils and especially sweat. Time to rejuvenate, re-energize and reverse the damages that summer causes on the skin: sun damage, clogged pores, and oily or irritated skin.

Soaking in bath salts ease tired, achy muscles after being so active all summer. Also bath of powdered milk gets rid of dry, ashy skin. Make sure that water isn’t too hot! it will melt away the natural protective oils and cause skin to dry out.

Don’t forget to exfoliate to get rid of dead skin. Exfoliate your skin with scrubs purchased or a sea salt scrub made at home.

Remember the feet! During the summer, the skin around the heels can become very dry and cracked. This occurrence is very common, often caused by open–backed sandals and flip–flops rubbing around the edge of the heel. Soaking your feet, whether at a professional spa or at home, can be a really relaxing and enjoyable experience. Use warm water with Epsom salts, and/or consider adding scented oils like gardenia, patchouli or peppermint (and get additional aromatherapy benefits). Do not soak in hot water, as that is dehydrating, drying and saps the moisture out of the feet. Pat feet dry and then use a foot file, emery board or pumice stone to gently rub away the hard skin. Finish by applying a rich moisturizing cream to soften the skin.

One major thing to do to help your skin stay young, supple and healthy is to hydrate! Everyone says it because it’s true. You’re more active and sweating more, so you must increase the water intake to make up for the loss. Hydrate to flush out impurities that can harm the organs. And remember: the skin is the body’s largest organ!

Finally, apply a light moisturizer to seal in all the benefits from your pampering soak. Repeat through Fall and you’ll be ready for whatever you face for the rest of the year!
