While looking to discover new artists at the International African Arts Festival, just had to stop at this booth to look for new hats! Buy one good hat, and become addicted to finding more!
Did you know that a good hat is the best partner to sunscreen on sunny days, no matter your skin tone? Protect your scalp and face with a good hat!
The African Festival is always so fun and inspiring and empowering. Not only can you find hats, there’s clothing, jewelry, music, original artworks. Can’t leave empty-handed. Love the creative atmosphere!
Ashaka Givens’ hat store has an amazing collection to match any mood or occasion. So many sunny days this summer that I intentionally sought out new hats. This first one is so elegant, and it lent me even more height! It topped off the look that I wore to Grace Jones’ concert this June. (Of course, as you see, no one can outshine Ms. Jones and the hats that she wore on stage!)
For the second hat, look at Ashaka’s enthusiasm about her creations.
Ashaka’s first major client was Erykah Badu. Her work was seen on the carpet of the Met Gala, perfect for this year’s Dapper theme.
Every time I need a new look or stylish sun protection, I go to #AshakaGivens !
Are you protecting your skin on these sunny days? It’s important to use sunscreen and top it off with a nice brimmed hat that shades the eyes, ears, cheek bones— the prominent features of the face that the sun’s dangerous rays hit first. Dermatologists see skin damage from the sun on the face, neck, scalp and ears everyday.
To find the most protective hat, hold it up to the sun and buy a tightly-woven one where the light doesn’t shine through.
Be sure to wear the hat especially when the sun is most intense, between 10am-4pm.
A good hat will can make your head feel cooler, keep the sun from drying out your hair, and block ultraviolet rays that damage the scalp.
A brim 3” or wider will protect your neck, too.
Be sure to use sunscreen especially on what the hat doesn’t cover, no matter your skin tone!
Finally, finish your protective outfit with UV blocking sunglasses to prevent damage to the eyes and the delicate skin around it.
Style safely; be skin smart!
